Art Works Gallery Launches Scholarship in Conjunction With Their 8th Anniversary Celebration
Saturday July 14th will be a busy day at Art Works Gallery in Downtown Grass Valley. We will be celebrating our eighth anniversary with a 15% off of everything sale, having a party with live music and refreshments, raising funds for the launch of a new scholarship, as well as having artist demonstrations.
Art Works Gallery strives to give back to the community that helps to support us. This time the cause is especially near and dear to our hearts. As a remembrance to Linda Kaneko, one of our founding members who passed away earlier this year, we would like to offer the Linda Kaneko Art Scholarship, which will be given to a local student. With every donation to this fund, people will have a chance to receive gift certificates worth $100 for use at the gallery. For each $1 donation, one ticket is given, or 6 tickets for $5. For those who want to enter, you can get the tickets starting now until the drawings during the Anniversary party on June 14th. You need not be present to win.
The usual Second Saturday artist demonstrations will be happening from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm. Two artists will be featured. Bill Wilson will demonstrate some of his gourd art techniques, including wood burning, carving, cutting, dyeing, and painting. Susan Lobb Porter will demonstrate some of the many tools she uses to create her layered mixed media paintings.
Then from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm join us for our 8th Anniversary Celebration. Many of the gallery artists will be on hand to visit with and thank friends and customers for helping the artist cooperative be so successful over the years.

Art Works loves giving back to our community. We are proud to be supporting OSEC. We feel that the work they do to support in-home caregivers can touch all of our lives and is a real asset to our community. Starting June 22nd, people can come in and see what our artists have contributed for the prize drawings. Participating artists will have a piece of their artwork on display for people to win in exchange for a donation to OSEC. For each dollar donated, a ticket will be given for the drawings that will happen during our 7th Year Anniversary celebration.
What is OSEC? One Source Empowering Caregivers - OSEC is a one-stop resource for people caring for a loved one in their home. For those of us who have needed to do this, you know how difficult and demanding this can be. In essence, OSEC vets, trains and manages volunteer respite caregivers and provides support for caregivers in a variety of ways, all free of charge. The service they provide is so much more than that. OSEC works with nurses to first visit the home and evaluate needs of the physical space, based on the condition of the incapacitated loved one, and helps with many resources. Volunteers are carefully matched to the individual and spend about 4 hours a week helping with whatever a particular caregiver needs. Everything is done by volunteers, there are no paid employees in this 501c3 non-profit, not even the director.

Neighbors Helping Neighbors
Work made by the artists of the Neighborhood Center of Arts (NCA) will be featured in our front window October 28th through November 8th.
A reception will be held Sunday November 3rd from 2:00pm-4:00pm at the gallery. Art Works will donate 10% of all sales that evening to the Neighborhood Center of Arts. During the reception there will be a free raffle every half hour to win a piece of work from one the NCA artists.
About NCA (Neighborhood Center of the Arts);
www.neighborhoodcenterofthearts.com
NCA provides opportunities for adults with developmental disabilities to grow to the best of their ability through the arts and community integration. Each day up to fifty NCA artists work in the Center's studio to create weavings, ceramics, paintings, drawings, woodworking, jewelry, and computer arts.
"Our programs promote creativity, independence and dignity," says NCA Director Amee Medeiros. "For instance, consider Cindy Benson, who works in our studios 5 days a week. The income that she earns from the sale of her artwork allows her to live on her own, take vacations, and maintain an independent, self-supporting lifestyle." Neighborhood Center of the Arts is located at 200 Litton Drive #212 in Grass Valley (530) 272-7287.
50% of the proceeds from the sale of works by NCA artists will go to Neighborhood Center of the Art to support its programs; the other 50% goes to the artists who created the work.
"We are delighted to sponsor this event with Neighborhood Center of the Arts for the fourth year. Art Works Gallery strives to find ways to contribute to the community," says AWG president Gail Lipson.

Art Works Gallery Self Portrait Window Installation
|
What some of our artists have to say about their portraits;
“The Inner Life of an Artist” painting by Kathryn Wronski “The ocean and dogs are very important in my life. Both give me a sense of calm. To work on a painting that was for me, not a commission, made me go to this place in my mind where the only sounds are the ocean and a few seagulls with gentle nudges from Babs. A good day.” “I’m a Pretty Good Idea Self-portrait” mosaic by Susan Crocenzi “Everything in this piece represents the emergence of ideas. Some are incubating. Some are fast moving and quite purposeful, as if they’ve been summoned. Some are decaying, falling back into the subterranean recycler. Some are bubbling up into a conscious state, and some are headed even farther than that.” “Last Day in Barcelona” photograph by Gail Lipson “We were wandering around Barcelona on the last day of our European trip when we came across this building whose façade looked like shards of a mirror. We waved to ourselves, said farewell to Barcelona.” “Two-sided Portrait” painting by Katie Wolff “As a portrait artist I wanted to do a nice portrait to encourage patrons to commission me to do themselves or a loved on, but I still wanted a different ‘twist’ to it. I created a two-sided portrait that hangs in my open wall between my living room and a walkway. Now I finally have a portrait of the little guy too!” “Monte and me” painting by Cheryl Wilson “Although the girl takes up more of the canvas, it is the dog who is the real star of the picture. It is a picture of Monte and me standing in a field during obedience class when he was young. By now I would say that Monte has me very well trained indeed.” |
April 1-15: Bear River High School Art ShowArt Works Gallery is hosting an evening reception and fundraising show
and sale featuring the work of art students from Bear River High School. The show runs from April 1 to 15, with a special reception on Friday, April 5, from 5 to 7 PM at 113 Mill Street in downtown Grass Valley. All of the proceeds from the sale of works by Bear River High School artists will go to the students involved. In addition, all 36 member/artists of Art Works Gallery will donate 10% of their sales during the April 5 reception towards art supplies for the school. “This show is important because it validates the arts in education for our community,” says art teacher Elizabeth Jens. “Art brings much joy to my students – and for those that apply themselves – much learning and understanding of the world around them. “To understand how important art classes are to our students,” continues Jens, “just listen to what they say:” |
Quotes from the students;“Art has become an essential piece of my life and allows me to express
myself in creative, relaxing ways with color and creativity” Mikayla Laymance, Sophomore “With so many stressful classes, art has become the place that I look forward to coming to so that I can be free to create and be imaginative without strict guidelines as to how” Taylor Dutrow, Junior “Art has taught me to see the beauty in mundane things and to find inspiration in everything around me” Hannah Grimes, Junior “I can’t live with out it“ Travis Kirk, Senior “IT’S AMAZING!!!!!!!” Brandon Day, Senior “You can’t spell art without Jens. Thank goodness that it’s art class and we don’t have to spell…” Parker Schwartz, Senior “IT IS SO MUCH FUUUNNNNN!!” Alex Watkins, Freshman |
